UPDATE: 12 hospitalized after fire in Terre Haute apartment tower

TERRE HAUTE — A smoky fire forced residents from a seven-story apartment building in Terre Haute for senior citizens and those with disabilities.

Authorities say 12 people were taken to hospitals Thursday night for treatment of smoke inhalation or burns from the fire at Garfield Towers. Keith Holbert of the Vigo County Emergency Management Agency says no life-threatening injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Jeff Fisher tells the Tribune-Star that the blaze started in the building’s sixth-floor lobby. He says the fire was quickly put out, but heavy black smoke came from windows on the sixth and seventh floors.

Fisher says about 240 people live in the Terre Haute Housing Authority facility. Many of the residents were taken to a temporary shelter at a high school.
