Terre Haute park officials blame budget cuts for drying up a local swimming pool this summer.
Eddie Bird, superintendent of the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation Department, informed the parks board Wednesday the city will have to keep Sheridan Pool closed this year because of a $292,000 slash of its budget. Located off Vorhees Street, it was the least used pool in the city, he said.
Since the establishment of property tax caps three years ago, the parks department has lost more than $1 million, he said.
Meanwhile, Deming Pool will be filled today with plans to open that facility June 2, depending on temperatures.
In other business, Bird said residents seem eager to access the city’s newest park, the Maple Avenue Nature Park across from Ouabache Elementary.
“We are getting hammered by phone calls,” he said, explaining to the board that the park could open within the next two weeks depending on paperwork being returned from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
