Regional opens new rehab facility

TERRE HAUTE — Rehabilitation specialists at Regional Hospital moved a little closer to home Thursday with the grand opening of new a facility.

More than 7,100 square feet of floor space was bright and clean, as Terre Haute Regional Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation staff hosted an open house at their new location inside Regional Pavilion. Located next to the hospital, the facility has a new home in the western portion of the former HealthSouth Building rather the previous location at Springhill Drive and U.S. 41.

Karen Cotner, rehabilitation services director, said patients and staff will enjoy shorter trips than they made to the old location. “The nice thing is the proximity,” she said. “It’s so close to the hospital.”

Candi Carroll, Regional’s chief nursing officer, said the organization has plans for the rest of the 60,000-square-foot property, and more programming will be coming to that location over the next 12 to 24 months.

“It’s nice to unpack and start moving back in here,” she said.

Visitors milled about a wide array of exercise equipment and exam areas as Cotner explained the group offers a broad mix of services. From physical and occupational therapy, to speech-language pathology, therapists on site also bring a number of specialties to the patient, including hand therapy, splinting and lymphedema therapy.

Therapist Julie Pendleton specializes in a a speech treatment for those suffering from Parkinson Disease and other neurological conditions. She also works with those suffering from learning disabilities and injuries.

“It’s nice to start at a new site,” she said, noting she treats patients ranging in age from 2 to 90 years.

Meanwhile, physical therapy assistant Steve Walden specializes in gait and balance using Tai Chi. One of only two senior instructors in the field, Walden noted he’s been at Terre Haute Regional Hospital 13 years and is excited about the move.

“I love the new facility. It’s so bright and cheery,” he said, pointing to the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Cotner said the group has 500 and 600 patient visits per month, ranging from sports injuries to strokes.

“It’s [the new facility] a move forward, and I think it will be convenient,” she said.
