Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s choice of Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate is a popular move among members of the Wabash Valley tea party.
Romney’s selection of Ryan, 42, the House Budget Committee chairman, signals that the tea party concern over the nation’s $15 trillion debt has reached the top of the GOP ticket, Wabash Valley tea party supporters said Tuesday evening during a meeting at the VFW Post at 12th and Mulberry streets.
“It says we’re serious,” said Mary Wright, an organizer of the Wabash Valley tea party movement. “We want something done.”
Other tea party supporters echoed Wright’s feelings about the Ryan selection.
“I think it’s a great pick,” said Laura Wilkey, who was attending the tea party meeting. “I like Paul Ryan. I like his ideas. I like his conservative values.”
Ryan has become known for his budget proposals and, especially, for his suggested overhaul of the Medicare program, the leading driver of the federal debt. Ryan’s plan would pay people under 55 to purchase a government-approved health care plan whose costs would be determined by competitive bidding. More expensive plans would be available for those wanting more coverage. Those wanting cheaper plans could keep any savings, according to the plan.
President Obama’s campaign has criticized Ryan’s Medicare plans, saying it will lead to cuts in Medicare services for seniors.
“He’ll solve the Medicare problem,” said Dennis Wilkey.
But among the approximately 80 Wabash Valley tea party supporters at Tuesday’s meeting, the Ryan pick was largely seen as a good one by a presidential candidate that had not necessarily won some of them over.
“I’m not overly thrilled with Romney, but he’s the best that we’ve got,” said Ray Harney of Rockville, who was also at Tuesday night’s tea party meeting. As for Ryan, Harney thinks the congressman was a good choice.
“I was a little iffy to start with [about Ryan],” Harney said. “But the more I think about it, the more I think it was a good decision to make.”
