Obama wins bellwether Vigo County

TERRE HAUTE — President Barack Obama defeated Republican rival Mitt Romney in Vigo County, 19,553 votes to 19,229.

Vigo County is consider among the top bellwether counties in the country for predicting the outcome of national elections. Since 1888, the county has failed only twice in voting for the eventual winner.

One came in 1952 when Vigo County narrowly went for Illinois’ Adlai Stevenson over Dwight Eisenhower. The other was in 1908 when William Jennings Bryan won a tight Vigo County race over William Henry Harrison.
