PRAIRIE CREEK —
Police believe they may have uncovered a cock-fighting operation spanning two Wabash Valley counties.
Sheriff’s deputies from Sullivan and Vigo counties arrived at a home on Indiana 246 in Vigo County east of Prairie Creek on Tuesday evening where they allegedly discovered roosters that had suffered abuse and were prepared for fighting.
They also found dead birds at the residence, said Clark Cottom, chief deputy of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. Cottom said animal fighting paraphernalia was also allegedly discovered at the farm.
More than 100 birds were believed to be in a barn at the residence, Cottom said.
Owning animals for fighting purposes is a Class-D felony under Indiana law. Owning animal fighting paraphernalia is a Class-A misdemeanor.
Deputies from Vigo and Sullivan counties were at the residence. Police were still considering Tuesday evening whether to investigate a potential second site where cock-fighting has been alleged in Sullivan County, Cottom said. Information gathered Tuesday was expected to be turned over to prosecutors, he said.
