At the new Sullivan Area Art Guild gallery, works of art can be admired — and much of it also can be purchased.
A grand opening for the gallery at 16 S. Court St. is planned from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
It’s the first time the Art Guild has operated its own gallery, said Sharon Hawk, an art guild member who had the vision for it and did much of the work to get the facility ready.
“It means a lot to provide this to the community,” said Hawk, who already has sold one of her oil paintings, titled “Flower Power,” for $150.
Her husband, Arlo, also has made some wooden items, including a Kentucky Coffee Bean plant stand, on sale for $75, and a small oak coffee table with walnut stain, on sale for $100.
The gallery has several paintings, both oil and water color, some ceramic items, photography and wooden items. It will accept fine arts, including 3-D and smaller sculptures, but no crafts.
Artist Harold Medsker has a large digital photo on canvas for sale, as well as hand-made note cards for $5 each.
Miniature paintings are on sale for $5 each.
About 14 artists have about 50 to 60 pieces on display, mostly paintings. At this point, all works are by Art Guild members, but the gallery is also open to non-members.
The building’s owner has agreed to share space with the Art Guild. “I think our benefactor’s idea is to provide this for the community to come in and enjoy,” Hawk said. “It’s a way for him to give back.”
He prefers not to be named, she said.
The new gallery “also lets folks know there are practicing artists in this community. There’s a lot more than just the Art Guild people that I hope will want to share their art with others,” Hawk said.
The gallery accepts art from all members of the Guild. Others who wish to show their work may do so by paying an annual $25 entry fee. A commission of 10 percent for members and 20 percent for non-members will be paid to the guild for all sold work.
The gallery opens for the first time Sunday. Regular hours will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
It’s been Hawk’s dream to have a gallery for the Guild. A retired art teacher, she wants to share her love of art with the community “and help bring some culture to the community.”
She was an art teacher for 41 years and is concerned about cutbacks in art programs at schools.
The Guild hopes to offer art classes for kids and adults at the new gallery. “We’ve already done an art boot camp for adults” at a local church, Hawk said.
Bonita Wamsley, art guild president, also is excited about the gallery’s opening. “This is outstanding to be able to display your work and be able to sell it somewhere where you can get your artwork out there,” Wamsley said.
Hawk said the long-range goal is to purchase the building and to obtain grants to offer programs.
She still has a wish list of items for the gallery, including large tables for classes, chairs and lighting.
