Army, Air Guard conduct joint exercise

TERRE HAUTE — A recent joint exercise between Indiana Army and Air Guard units was designed to help prepare guardsmen to respond in the case of a domestic emergency, according to a military news release.

The 181st Intelligence Wing and 76th Brigade Special Troops Battalion partnered March 7 and 8 for the first joint exercise — called Checkered Flag — hosted at Camp Atterbury.

Capts. Christopher Brownell (181st) and Christopher Silbaugh (76th) developed the Checkered Flag exercise, based on capabilities each unit provided to the state, and looked for a way to exercise a joint Indiana domestic emergency response.

The exercise allowed soldiers to integrate their separate skill sets to provide real-time video to a ground station manned by the 181st.

“This exercise will increase our state leadership’s organic ability to manage crisis situations and the Indiana Guard’s joint capability to support the incident commander during a disaster,” Brownell said.

“In the near future,” said Col. Kip Clark of the 181st, “airmen from the 181st IW may be co-located in incident response command posts … to provide commanders a real-time capability to assess natural disaster areas and more effectively manage their personnel.”
