TERRE HAUTE —
Fugitive Justin Compton died after being shot by police Wednesday night in a wooded area near Seelyville.
Indiana State Police report that Compton was swinging a knife at a K-9 officer when the shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. No officers were injured in the incident.
An autopsy was scheduled for 8 a.m. today at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning to the public Wednesday afternoon after police were told that Compton might be armed and should be considered dangerous. He had fled from authorities last week by running out of a courtroom and jumping from the second floor rotunda of the Vigo County Courthouse.
The Sheriff’s Department received a tip that Compton was in the Seelyville area, prompting a search that led to the pursuit into the wooded area.
Indiana State Police at Putnamville are investigating the shooting death of Compton.
