Terre Haute fireworks still going to blast off

Launch location being moved to a ‘safer spot’

TERRE HAUTE — Fourth of July fireworks are scheduled to go off as planned this year, but will be launched from a new, “safer” location.

Eddie Bird, superintendent of the Terre Haute City Parks and Recreation Department, told board members Wednesday that a site north of the levy along the Wabash River has been secured for the event.

“It’ll be a safer spot,” he said, referencing the burn ban in place throughout Vigo County, as well as dozens of other counties throughout Indiana. With only 0.22 of an inch of precipitation having fallen this month, grass and other organic matter throughout the area is dry.

The city normally shoots fireworks off from the Barkley Field softball complex, but Bird said the ground to be used this year is privately owned and will be soaked in advance by the Sugar Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Emergency responders also will be at the site that evening.

Fireworks should begin about 10 p.m., he said, adding pets and personal fireworks are prohibited from Fairbanks Park property during the event.

In other business, the mother of a former Deming Park Day Camp participant asked the board for an update concerning allegations her 6-year-old son was sexually assaulted by another camper last week.

Chou-il Lee, attorney for the City of Terre Haute, said the matter has been handed over to city police for investigation.

The mother, whose name is being withheld to protect the child’s identity, asked what, if any, measures have been taken to protect other participants in the day camp.

Lee said no comment can be issued until the investigation is complete.

“It’s difficult to proceed blindly until we have all the information,” he said.

The mother expressed dissatisfaction with those answers, stating afterward, “Public change is hard to come by.”
