Frontier celebrates downtown Wi-Fi

Limited service will be free in ‘hot spot’

TERRE HAUTE — Free, limited wireless Internet service is now available all over downtown Terre Haute.

Frontier Communications announced Friday morning the company has switched on a Wi-Fi network that blankets the city from Poplar Street in the south to near Union Hospital in the north and from Third Street in the west to about 10th Street in the east.

The network, known as a “hot spot,” includes free Wi-Fi service for up to 100 users at any given time, said Marc Evans, regional general manager for Frontier. A faster-speed, fee-based service is also available through the new network, he said.

“Community … that’s what it’s about for us,” Edwards told a gathering of more than 50 people Friday morning at the Clabber Girl Bake Shop.

Having downtown Wi-Fi access is not the “be-all, end-all” for the city, Evans said. But when it comes to attracting business and individuals to Terre Haute, “it can’t hurt.”

Terre Haute is the first city in the Frontier network to have a community Wi-Fi network up and running, Edwards said. The company, which has customers in 27 states, is attempting to establish community “hot spots” in other areas as well, Evans noted.

Evans thanked city officials for working with the company to make the network a reality. Frontier had to receive permission from the city to mount Wi-Fi radio transmitters on public utility poles or in public right-of-ways. Before granting that permission, city officials asked that the company also provide some free Wi-Fi service in the network, which the company agreed to do.

Mayor Duke Bennett, who spoke at the official launch of the new system, thanked Frontier for their investment in downtown. He also said the Wi-Fi network is “another tool” to promote economic growth.

“It’s another feather in our cap,” Bennett said. “It didn’t cost the city a dime.”

The network currently covers about 0.21 square mile but could later be expanded, Evans said.

Frontier customers can pay a $9.99 monthly fee for permanent access to the high-speed network and any other Frontier wireless network, Evans said. One hour usage of the high-speed Wi-Fi service will cost $1.99. One day costs $4.99 and one week costs $19.99.

Free Wi-Fi service, at a somewhat slower connection speed, is also available downtown but is limited to 100 users at a given time, Evans said. That free service could also be expanded later depending upon usage, he said.
