TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man in a stolen car was arrested after he tried to flee from police investigating an early Thursday shooting.

Rodney Wells, 36, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Thursday afternoon, where Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for his arrest on charges of receiving stolen property and driving while suspended.

Detective John Childs reported that Wells was stopped by police near a crime scene on Robertson Road. When deputies tried to wave Wells past the scene, he allegedly made a U-turn and fled. Police pursued and stopped the car.

Childs said Wells told police he was going to a friend’s house, but he did not have his driver’s license on him. A license check determined that Wells was driving while suspended, and that the red 1997 Grand Prix that he was driving had been reported stolen from Jasonville on Tuesday.

Wells has a criminal history that includes a 1996 conviction for burglary, a 2005 conviction for resisting law enforcement, and arrests for battery and theft.

Lewis set Wells’ bail at $25,000 cash only. Formal charges are to be filed in the case by Tuesday.
