Plane crashes near Montezuma; no serious injuries reported

MONTEZUMA — Officials said a small airplane with two people on board crashed about three miles north of Montezuma midday Friday.

Police reported neither the pilot nor the passenger suffered serious injuries, although both were taken to Union Hospital at Clinton.

The pilot was identified as Don Garrard, 70, of Montezuma and the passenger was his son-in-law, Robert Williamson, of Noblesville.

Both were treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

The Parke County Sheriff’s Department said the plane crashed about 12:45 p.m. near Montezuma, about 25 miles north of Terre Haute.

The two-seat plane was taking off from Garrard’s private airstrip in West Union when it dipped to the right and dipped to the left before hitting some power lines, said Sgt. Randel Kneeland of the Parke County Sheriff’s Department.

When the sheriff’s department arrived at the scene, the plane “had completely burned up,” Kneeland said.

He said both Garrard and Williamson “are doing fine” with some minor injuries.

Representatives of the Federal Aviation Administration were at the scene to conduct an investigation and determine the cause of the crash, Kneeland said.

Other agencies that responded included the Montezuma volunteer fire department and the Parke County EMS.
