Book, demonstrations give Valley residents ‘Food for Thought’

TERRE HAUTE — From farmers to French chefs, the world of food is rooted in Hoosier soil.

Dozens gathered Saturday morning inside the Clabber Girl Museum for readings and demonstrations involving “Food for Thought: An Indiana Harvest,” a capstone project of Indiana Humanities.

Part of a two-year project designed to foster conversations about Indiana’s food industry, the book features 80 first-person narratives of Hoosiers ranging from farmers to executives, including Gary Morris, president and chief operating officer of Clabber Girl.

As part of the morning’s program, Morris moved the group into Clabber Girl’s kitchen classroom, where he prepared Bourbon Peach Cobbler.

His own involvement in food, he said, goes beyond the board room.

“Besides running Clabber Girl obviously, it’s a hobby for me, cooking. It always has been,” he said, lining up hometown ingredients including Clabber Girl baking powder, corn starch and W.H. Harrison Indiana Straight Bourbon Whiskey, which is produced in Clay County. “I love to cook anything.”

Kristin Fuhs Wells, spokeswoman for Indiana Humanities, said the organization joined others in 2010 to tour the state’s far-reaching food network of producers.

In addition to traditional farming as seen in fields from the highways, artisanal products ranging from cheeses to beer also call Indiana home, she said. Many of these speciality foods are sought after by chefs in urban areas such as Chicago.

“Local is such a buzz word,” she said, adding that many feel Indiana is in the midst of an agricultural “renaissance,” from urban gardens in Indianapolis to goat milk and produce in rural areas.

Indiana Humanities commissioned author David Hoppe to write the book, with photography by Kristin Hess.

Hoppe was at Clabber Girl on Saturday, describing his two years on the road interviewing Hoosier producers.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” he said, describing the book as a collection of stories. “The stories themselves are fascinating.”
