Gas pains: Refinery issues get blame for $4 at the pump

TERRE HAUTE — Wabash Valley residents pumped their pain along with most Midwesterners this weekend, as refinery woes kept gas prices near $4 per gallon.

Greg Seiter, spokesman for the American Auto Association, said a combination of issues involving pipeline ruptures in Wisconsin and refinery dysfunction in Indiana and Illinois were to blame for last week’s sudden spike.

“We’re in such a ‘need-it-now’ mode when it comes to our petroleum that any disruption is going to cause some problems in the market,” he said.

The AAA website features a page dedicated to fuel prices at www.fuelgaugereport.aaa.com which tracks daily prices for drivers. According to the site, Saturday afternoon’s national average price for regular unleaded gasoline was $3.595, up from $3.338 a month ago but down from $3.703 last year.

Meanwhile, Indiana’s statewide average for regular unleaded on Saturday was $3.92. Illinois’ average for the same was $4.027, with Michigan coming in at $3.991.

Singh Palvindr was working at the Quik Mart on North Lafayette at Fourth Avenue on Friday night with unleaded regular prices set at $3.89 per gallon. But business, he said, was no different than any other day.

“No problems. All the gas stations are very expensive,” he said, noting his customers hadn’t been complaining about the prices.

At the Marathon station on Hulman and South Seventh streets, Daniel Downing grudgingly pumped $3.95 one gallon at a time into his Chevrolet truck.

“Yeah, I drive this old truck and can’t afford to get anything new that gets good gas mileage,” he said.

According to an Associated Press report, petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan of GasBuddy.com said the combination of events leading to the nearly 40-cent per gallon price jump should be rectified soon and prices adjusted within the next few weeks.
