Vigo County hopefuls tackle budget issues

TERRE HAUTE — Candidates for Vigo County Commissioner and Vigo County Council fielded questions from watching budget costs to ways to improve the community during a League of Women Voters forum Monday at the Vigo County Annex.

Republicans Caleb Fleschner and Brad Anderson, along with Democratic incumbents Judith Anderson and Paul Mason each pointed out challenges for the future.

Fleschner said Vigo County needs to maintain its Rainy Day Fund for future economic concerns, improve its notification requirement to impacted residents for county zoning changes and keep a balanced budget.

Brad Anderson said communication among West Terre Haute, Terre Haute and Vigo County can be improved to better coordinate solutions to problems and to continue economic development efforts for the county.

Judith Anderson said the county has taken a “do more with less” attitude for the past three years and has worked with the Vigo County Council to use Rainy Day Funds for much-needed county road improvements.

Mason said keeping the younger generation in Vigo County is important, and that county officials are working as a team to do that, pointing to the development of jobs in the Vigo County Industrial Park and the ongoing addition of NantWorks in the former Pfizer Exubera facility.

All of the commissioner candidates said the addition of a health clinic and wellness program in the county is a way to reduce health risks and has lowered health costs to the county.

Just three candidates for Vigo County Council — Democrats Rick Burger and incumbent Ed Ping and Republican Bill Treadway addressed the forum. Candidate Mark Bird reported an illness.

Burger said his 36 years working for Duke Energy included 17 years in economic development, traveling the world and meeting with site consultants. He continues that work as a board member of the Terre Haute Economic Development Corp. Burger said his skills include working with budgets, having served on a school board in Lafayette overseeing a more than $70 million budget.

Treadway said his prior experience in the Vigo County Voter Registration office allowed him to work in a bipartisan manner and his previous work as a transportation planner in the Vigo County Area Planning Department gives him insight into county government. He said he has learned common sense budgeting from his family of five young boys.

Ping said he has served on the County Council for four years and has learned the budget process and is able to be financially responsible. Ping said the council has kept costs down and has placed the county in a good economic condition.

Max Jones, editor of the Tribune-Star, which co-sponsored the forum along with the Vigo County Public Library, served as moderator.
