ISU students lead Wabashiki cleanup effort

Students hope to fill the wetlands with Sycamores this weekend as part of a cleanup initiative.

Emmy Atwa, student intern with Riverscape, the annual cleanup at the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area will be between 10 a.m. and noon Sunday morning. Volunteers should meet at the west side of the Indiana State University Arena on North Fourth Street at 10 a.m.

“We want as many people as will come. We have buses to take them all,” Atwa said.

The ISU senior from Jasonville said this weekend will be her first foray into the wetlands, and it’s something in which she’s excited to participate. In recent years, students have cleaned trash and debris from the area and built small walking bridges along numerous trails there.

The Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area is protected wetlands west of the Wabash River beginning south of U.S. 40 at West Terre Haute. For years, the area served as a place for illegal dumping, and considerable trash remains. Atwa said gloves and trash bags will be provided for volunteers.

“It’s a great way to clean up the wetlands,” she said of the project.

Wabash River Development and Beautification Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the riverfront. Atwa said the group has long partnered with ISU in its endeavors, from cleanups to organization. More information is available on the group’s Facebook page Wabash Valley’s Riverscape or via email at info@wabashriverscape.org.
