Irene Miller recognized for work against domestic violence

TERRE HAUTE — A woman dedicated to serving victims of domestic violence in Vigo County has received a statewide recognition for her efforts.

Irene Miller is the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Domestic Violence Professional award given annually by the Indiana Coalition against Domestic Violence. She was reognized on Wednesday during the ICADV fall conference, and on Thursday she was honored for her work in the Vigo County Courthouse by colleagues and friends.

“We are happy Irene is being recognized for all the hard work she does for domestic violence survivors in Vigo County,” Prosecutor Terry Modesitt said during a news conference prior to the reception.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Rob Roberts concurred.

“She’s been doing this for 11 years,” Roberts said of Miller. “For someone to continue putting that much time and effort into this work, to help some of the most downtrodden people, says a lot about Irene.”

Miller first became involved with victims as a police officer, and she was later assigned as domestic violence investigator for the prosecutor’s office. Through family members, she has experienced what domestic violence can do to loved ones, she said, so the work she does is close to her heart.

Miller said she does her work in hopes that victims will get away from the violence in their lives, even if they only make that break for a little while. At least the victims know there is someone who will assist, she said.

Miller was nominated for the state award by Lori Howard, the county’s current domestic violence deputy prosecutor.
