Suspect jailed after allegedly stealing, crashing bucket truck; BAC 0.182 percent

TERRE HAUTE —

A Terre Haute man faces multiple criminal charges after allegedly stealing a bucket truck and taking it for a bumpy ride late Thursday.

Austin J. Sedletzeck, 20, appeared via video Friday morning in Vigo Superior Court 6 where Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for his arrest on motor vehicle theft, a class-D felony, and the misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement, driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

Detective Devon Heubner of the Terre Haute Police Department testified that at 9:25 p.m. Thursday, police dispatch broadcast that a stolen bucket truck was in the area of 16th Street and Eighth Avenue. The truck got into an accident on Plum Street when it hit a fence and tree, and the driver bailed out of the disabled truck at 14th and Plum.

When police arrived at the scene, they saw a man and woman standing in a nearby yard. The man was holding a beer and had a large wet stain on his shirt and his pants were falling down.

Both the man and woman denied knowing who had driven the truck, but when a police K-9 unit arrived at the scene, the dog tracked from the truck to the man. A witness told police that the man, Sedletzeck, was driving the truck.

The woman told police that after the accident, Sedletzeck came to the door of her house and told her he was her brother’s friend. She said she had never seen Sedletzeck before.

Heubner said Sedletzeck appeared agitated as the police investigated, and refused to take a breath test. About two hours after the incident, his blood-alcohol content registered 0.182 percent, police said.

The judge set bond at $25,000, with no 10 percent allowed. Final charges are to be filed Thursday.
