Burn ban in Parke County

PARKE COUNTY — The ongoing drought has Parke County joining the growing list of those with burn bans in place.

The Parke County Board of Commissioners signed into place an emergency burn ban Monday afternoon, making it one of 61 Indiana counties to do so, according to the state’s Department of Homeland Security website.

Parke County’s ban prohibits campfires and other recreational fires unless enclosed in a ring at least 23 inches in diameter and 8 inches in height. Open burning also is prohibited. Exceptions to the ban include grills fueled by charcoal or propane, although charcoal from such units should not be removed until it is fully extinguished.

The use of fireworks has been limited to between 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset between June 29 and July 9, and the hours of 10 a.m. to midnight on July 4.

As of today, Clay and Putnam are the only Wabash Valley counties to not have a burn ban in place, according to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s list, which can be found online at www.in.gov/dhs/files/burn-ban/.
