T-S reporter Loughlin wins two firsts in state contest

INDIANAPOLIS — A veteran Tribune-Star reporter has been recognized as elite among her peers by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Sue Loughlin received two first-place awards in the Best of the Best in Indiana Journalism awards on Friday for stories she wrote in 2011.

Her recognition has earned her accolades among her Tribune-Star co-workers as well.

“These awards reinforce what our readers already know: that Sue is an experienced, talented and versatile reporter,” said Editor Max Jones. “The Tribune-Star and Terre Haute are fortunate to have her.”

Her feature “The Woods ‘First Mother’” about Dottie King, recently selected as the 16th president of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, earned Loughlin top honors in the Personality Profile category for daily newspapers with circulation of less than 40,000.

The contest judges commented: “A well-organized, insightful look into what makes this new college president tick.”

Loughlin also earned first place in Education Coverage for the article “Whatever It Takes to Help Them,” a feature on the teachers and staff of Franklin Elementary School and what they are accomplishing.

Again, the contest judges commended the entry by commenting: “Terrific profile of how teachers and administrators in one of the state’s most economically challenged districts are making a real difference in the lives of children.”

Loughlin has been a reporter with the Tribune-Star since August 1981. While the focus of her reporting is education, she also reports on other aspects of the Wabash Valley.

This was the 33rd annual contest sponsored by the Indiana Professional chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
