U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force apprehends wanted Terre Haute man

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man wanted on fraud charges was arrested Thursday morning after a vehicle pursuit involving members of the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force.

Shawn Michael Bass, 25, faces felony charges of resisting law enforcement following a chase that began about 11:30 a.m. near 25th Street and Ohio Boulevard after Bass was spotted leaving a residence in a white 1998 Plymouth Breeze.

Bass was wanted on a Vigo County Division 6 warrant for failure to appear in court on four counts of fraud on a financial institution, a class-C felony.

When task force members — consisting of officers from the U.S. Marshal’s Service, Indiana State Police, and the Terre Haute Police Department — tried to make a traffic stop on the car, the vehicle sped off. The chase went northbound on 25th Street across Wabash Avenue and continued on various side streets and alleys before the car crashed into a tree in the 2400 block of First Avenue at 11:49 a.m.

Bass then fled on foot, but was apprehended moments later by ISP Sgt. Chris Effner and THPD officer Ted Lemke.

Two other men in the car were briefly detained and later released with no charges pending. No injuries or other property damage was reported. The maximum reported speed of the chase was 50 mph, covering about 10 to 12 city blocks.

The crash was investigated by ISP master trooper Jason Owen, with assistance in the pursuit and apprehension by various ISP troopers and THPD officers.
