Fair season draws near

Organizers preparing for 83rd annual Wabash Valley Fair

TERRE HAUTE — The line-up is set and work is under way as organizers ready themselves for the Vigo County Fair.

Dozens of volunteers met Thursday evening at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds to announce schedules for the 83rd annual event. Wabash Valley Fair Association President Jennifer Cook joked that organizers hope to order a dose of Thursday’s sunny weather for the week of July 8-14, but regardless of the forecast, activities will be hot all week.

Purdue University Extension educators Krista Farthing and Jim Luzar both said “the kids” provide their reason for the season each year.

“We really enjoy the kids,” Luzar said, noting most 4-H participants return year after year, and their enthusiasm is contagious.

Farthing said more than 1,000 area youth will participate this year in an eclectic spread of activities ranging from welding to rabbits.

“4-H is a big family, and the fair is our family reunion,” she said.

Cook said the event’s “free stage” will return this year, bringing contests such as frog jumping and arm-wrestling.

“This is something the fair board wants to do to give back to the community,” she said.

This year’s fair opens July 8 with the Wabash Valley Antique Engine and Tractors show as well as an all-day gospel music program at the free stage. The festivities end July 14 with the demolition derby at the grandstands.
