ISU wants to build football practice field behind Memorial Stadium

TERRE HAUTE — Trent Miles, football coach at Indiana State University, is seeking approval of the Vigo County Board of Commissioners to construct a practice field on the north side of the university’s Memorial Stadium.

A new grass sod practice field would be constructed on the north side of the stadium, which rests at Wabash and Brown avenues.

“Right now we have women’s soccer and men’s football using the same facility, and this would alleviate scheduling problems,” Miles said. “For us, having the opportunity to play on grass [at opponents’ fields], it also gives us a chance to practice on it. It saves wear and tear on [players’] knees and has less heat.”

Miles said the practice field would also be accessible to the Vigo County Youth Football League and the Vigo County School Corp. It would allow access for two teams to practice at the stadium at the same time, or give an area for a team to stretch or conduct pregame warmups.

“Youth football plays at one field right now, which gets worn down. Plus, it is really hard for youth football to find places to practice, so this would give them an opportunity to practice after school,” Miles said.

Miles said he has raised funds to make the practice field, with some work performed at reduced rates from contractors seeking to help the football team. Miles said he would like to start work on the field this month, to allow sod to take hold by August.

“We would build it and maintain it. It will not cost the county or the city,” Miles said.

“There is a big open space on the outside of the outfield fence at Memorial Stadium. It doesn’t affect any trees or the walkway. We would grade the ground, level it out, put in a sprinkler system and put in a field,” Miles said. “It won’t affect parking, the walkway or trees. The community gets something and we get something.”

County Attorney Michael Wright told commissioners the practice field will not have lights, but will be a sod-based practice field. Wright said there are no restrictive covenants on the property.

“A practice field would not decrease the value of that property,” Wright said.

The stadium property is owned by the county, but the use of the land was given to the City of Terre Haute in December 1920 for use as a public park, athletic field, exhibition ground, playground and general meeting place.

Indiana State University leases the property from the city under a 99-year agreement dated Oct. 8, 1966. ISU pays $10 a year in rent to the city. The university has an option to terminate the agreement any time after Oct. 1, 2016.

Commissioners are expected to further discuss the practice fields and possibly approve the practice field plan later this month, said Vigo County Commissioner Paul Mason.
