West Terre Haute officer arrested on theft charges

TERRE HAUTE — A West Terre Haute police officer is facing allegations of misusing his department-issued gasoline credit card.

Indiana State Police on Monday arrested West Terre Haute police officer Lt. Mark J. Arnold, 38, on six counts of theft, a class-D felony.

Arnold, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered himself to state police Monday evening at the Vigo County Jail. He immediately bonded out after posting 10 percent of a $15,000 bond, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

The alleged misuse of the credit card took place between Jan. 24 and Aug. 25 in 2011. Five of the 23 questionable purchases discovered were recorded by video surveillance and totaled $267.83, the ISP release states.

Current West Terre Haute police chief Don Lark requested the investigation after the Indiana State Board of Accounts found a spike in gas consumption by the police department and alleged misuse of the credit card assigned to Arnold, according to the state police.

Further investigation by the ISP found that Arnold had allegedly purchased gasoline for his personal truck, his girlfriend’s SUV and a portable gas can on multiple occasions at Pacific Pride fuel station at 2026 E. Harlan Drive in southern Vigo County, the ISP release states.

A class-D felony is the least-serious felony and can be pleaded down to a misdemeanor.

The ISP investigation was conducted by state police detective Tom Hanks. He was assisted by ISP Trooper B.J. Patterson, the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office and the West Terre Haute Police Department.
