Terre Foods board gains new members

TERRE HAUTE — Four new members have joined the board of directors of Terre Foods, a group of local people working to open a cooperative grocery store in Terre Haute. The full-service market would be member-owned and provide access to local, organic and natural foods.

Joining returning directors Robyn Morton, Andrew Conner and Denise Conrady, whose terms expire in 2013, are new directors Jennifer Hale, Lorrie Heber, Aaron Warner and Chris Weber.

Hale is a native of northern Vigo County. As a part of Terre Foods Co-Op, she wants to educate people about the benefits of eating fresh food and connect growers to those wanting to learn about planting. She also wants to see downtown Terre Haute thrive because its residents and workers will have access to fresh food. This will also allow her to help create a sustainable place to raise a family.

Heber says that over the years, her interest in local foods has become about much more than taste. She says it’s about: economic development in our area’s struggling rural communities; teaching people with limited means to cook nutritious foods; battling obesity and unhealthy lifestyles; and it’s about breaking the destructive effects of monoculture farming and treating animals more humanely.

Warner is a lifelong resident of Terre Haute who has taught courses in biology and chemistry (including the chemistry of food) at the high school level for the past 17 years. He also completed the Master Gardeners Program through the Purdue Extension Service. Outside of school, he is a beekeeper, hiker, do-it-yourselfer, fisherman and hunter.

Weber loves the taste and meaning behind fresh food. He currently runs the Rex Roasting Co. He has lived in Bloomington, Ill., Burlington, Vt., and Topeka and Lawrence, Kan., all which have strong, long-running co-ops and community markets. Living in those environments made him appreciate local food.
