Alleged botched theft of car parts ends in jail time

TERRE HAUTE — Three Terre Haute men were jailed Friday after allegedly attempting to steal car parts from a northern Vigo County business.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Luis Aguilar, 29, Steve Hoffman II, 24, and Thomas McDaniel, 20, in the predawn hours as they were reportedly leaving Elliot & Sons scrap yard on Pottsville Street on the west side of the Wabash River in Fayette Township.

Deputies Jim Haley and Lt. Don Westerfield were called to the scene a little past 4 a.m. Friday, according to a sheriff’s department news release. A security guard at Elliot & Sons had reported seeing several people loading car parts into a pickup truck at the yard, the release stated.

Deputy Haley witnessed a black pickup leaving the scrap yard and heading south on Pottsville Street. He initiated a “high risk” stop and was joined by Lt. Westerfield, according to the release. All three suspects were then arrested and taken to the Vigo County Jail, where they are facing allegations of theft. Aguilar is also facing allegations of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

The car parts were returned to the scrap yard, the sheriff’s department reported.
