I-70 accident slows traffic

TERRE HAUTE — A semitrailer accident slowed traffic on Interstate 70 early Sunday morning.

According to a news release issued by the Indiana State Police, the incident occurred at 8:45 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 70 near the 2-mile marker in the eastbound lanes. Emergency responders arrived at the scene of an overturned tractor-trailer just east of the entrance to the Clear Creek Rest Area.

According to the release, the semi was driven by Larry Larson, 69, of Kansas carrying 20,000 pounds of dry insulation. For an unknown reason, the vehicle veered to the right, and struck and destroyed nearly 100 feet of guardrail before overturning onto the passenger side in a wooded area.

The news release states that investigators believe Larson might have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

A minimal amount of diesel fuel was reportedly leaking into a ditch, but was contained by the Sugar Creek Fire/Rescue Department.

The vehicle — belonging to Doug Bradley Trucking of Salina, Kan. — was en route to Richmond. Larson was not injured and no tickets were issued at the scene.

Traffic was slowed in the area Sunday afternoon as workers cleaned the scene.
