Man gets 14-year sentence for battering in-laws

TERRE HAUTE — A man who pleaded guilty to a brutal attack on his in-laws in 2009 was sentenced Wednesday to 14 years in prison.

Brian Byron Hiatt, 40, will receive credit for more than 1,100 days behind bars since his July 2009 arrest. Hiatt pleaded guilty to class-B felony aggravated battery and class-C felony battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

The charges came from an incident in which he allegedly attacked a man and wife in their home. Both were hospitalized for their injuries.

During Wednesday’s sentencing hearing in Vigo Superior Court 6, Deputy Prosecutor Jason Saunders read victim impact statements that indicated the ongoing recovery and traumatic stress still felt by the victims.

Hiatt also had faced a class-C felony charge of intimidation for allegedly threatening someone with a knife. That case was dismissed in the plea agreement.

Judge Michael Lewis sentenced Hiatt to 14 years in prison, with 12 years executed and two years suspended to formal probation.
