Vigo Sheriff Ewing swears in new deputy

TERRE HAUTE — A new merit deputy has joined the ranks of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

Dayton Huebner was sworn in Friday by Sheriff Greg Ewing to become the department’s 39th merit deputy.

Huebner is no stranger to VCSD. He has worked as a corrections officer in the Vigo County Jail since Jan. 7, 2008.

“I’ve always wanted to be a police officer,” Huebner told the Tribune-Star. “Being a corrections officer just got my foot in the door.”

A graduate of Vincennes University with a business degree, Huebner will return to “school” in April when he attends the law enforcement training academy.

Attending the swearing-in ceremony in the department’s training room were Huebner’s parents, Paul and Peggy, his fiancee Kara Vangilder, and four-week-old daughter Maya. His brother Devonß Huebner, a canine officers with the Terre Haute Police Department, also attended to congratulate his younger sibling.

“I know the citizens of the county are very fortunate,” Ewing said as he pinned Huebner’s badge to his brown and tan uniform.

Huebner is the 13th deputy hired for the department since Ewing took office two years ago. Several deputies have retired, the sheriff said, and those positions have been filled.

The department also has 29 reserve deputies, and six special deputies.
