Terre Haute man gets 5 years for stabbing incident

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man who admitted to stabbing another person in a fight has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Isaiah Batson, 29, also received a five-year suspended sentence for being a habitual offender.

Batson pleaded guilty to battery by means of a deadly weapon, a class-C felony, related to the Sept. 14 stabbing in the 1300 block of Chestnut Street.

Terre Haute Police report that witnesses said Batson was riding his bike along the street when he stopped in front of a residence and got into an argument with another man, who walked up to Batson and allegedly punched him and knocked him to the ground.

Witnesses told police the two men fought until the fight broke apart and Batson started to chase the other man and stabbed him.

Batson had two prior unrelated felony convictions stemming from an armed robbery and a residential entry, which were the basis for the habitual offender enhancement.

Batson has been in the Vigo County Jail since his arrest, resulting in credit for 118 days. He will serve three years of his suspended sentence on formal probation, followed by two years of informal probation.
