Demon-ic possession: Lost dog’s tale ends with happy reuniting before Christmas

TERRE HAUTE — On Friday, Suzanne Franklin’s son found a lost, exhausted dog lying by a tree at 15th and Ohio streets.

“It literally had ice on its fur,” she said. The family fed the dog, bathed and brushed him, brushed his teeth and found him a collar.

They also called the Tribune-Star with the hope of reuniting the dog with its owners before Christmas.

Franklin’s efforts paid off. After an article appeared in the Tribune-Star — both online and in print — the dog, named Demon, was reunited with his owners, Andrea and Charles Edwards, who live nearby.

Franklin received a few calls Saturday morning, but was careful to ask several questions to identify the true owner. The dog also responded to the name the Edwards told Franklin, which was “Demon.”

When Charles Edwards came by in his truck to recover his wayward pooch, there was no doubt that Demon was back in paradise. Demon “jumped right in the truck. He knew who they were,” Franklin said.

She gave Edwards the dog’s toothpaste and toothbrush and the collar.

Franklin remembers when she lost one of her dogs. “I knew what they must have been going through. I’m ecstatic they have been reunited and we had a part in that,” Franklin said.

Edwards, in an interview Wednesday, said the dog ran off when a privacy fence blew over after last week’s storm. He said he spent Friday night looking for the dog.

On Saturday, someone showed the family the newspaper article, and they contacted Franklin.

Edwards said he’s thankful to Franklin and her son for finding and taking care of Demon and making the effort to find the owners. “It made my Christmas a lot better,” he said.

He gave Franklin’s son, 13-year-old Anthony Salazar, $20 and an Xbox 360 game. Also, Salazar is welcome to visit Demon any time, he said.
