Thursday’s winds, snow cause problems across Vigo County

TERRE HAUTE — A speedy drop in temperatures was matched by strong winds Thursday, and officials predict a colder weekend as Christmas approaches.

National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Puma said later that evening Terre Haute experienced strong gusts of wind that were expected to continue throughout the night.

“It looks like the peak wind today in Terre Haute was 52 miles per hour,” he said, noting that point was reached at 12:16 p.m.

The day’s high temperature of 57 degrees was reached at midnight, and strong winds ranged from 35 up to 52.

A smattering of wintery mix, rain and some snow also fell as power lines were disrupted and minor accidents occurred. According to Duke Energy’s website, 350 Vigo County customers remained without power at 8:30 p.m.

Puma said the weather should remain dry throughout the weekend though.

“We’re looking for colder weather,” he said, adding today’s high temperatures might reach 30 degrees with skies mostly cloudy. Saturday’s temperatures should be about 36 degrees with Sunday reaching a sunny 40. The next best chance of snow or rain is Christmas Eve, he said, adding that chance is only 30 percent.
