TERRE HAUTE —
Footballs fans lacking the cash to buy Super Bowl tickets will have plenty of party opportunities here at home next week.
Bonnie Herren, general manager at Buffalo Wild Wings on U.S. 41 South said Super Bowl Sunday will be an all-day affair there beginning early.
“Things start at 11 a.m.,” she said of food and drink specials. “It’s an all-day party.”
In addition to two new flavors of wings, “Jammin’ Jalepeno” and “Thai Curry,” the sports bar will feature a “Best Seats in the House” special complete with recliners facing the big screens. With 60 television sets, the establishment expects a big turnout, she said. Other features for the day include a “Best Dressed Fan” contest, where guests can compete based on their sports apparel.
“Any teams, all teams,” she said of that contest, noting she herself is a Chicago Bears fan open to either New York Giants or New England Patriots victories.
Up the street at Beef O’Brady’s on U.S. 41 near Voorhees Street, Dawn Laffata said her party kicks off about 6 p.m.
“We’re putting the finishing touches on it today,” she said Saturday afternoon of plans for next week’s party, which will feature prizes, giveaways and food and drink specials.
All 26 of the establishment’s television sets will be tuned in to the big game.
“And Patriots fans are welcome too,” she laughed, pointing out Giants kicker Steve Weatherford is still the hometown favorite regardless which uniform he wears. The Terre Haute North Vigo High School graduate comes back to town for a number of community causes, and Laffata said that tie-in has earned his team the cheering section. “We’re pulling for the Giants.”
Baesler’s Market on Poplar Street was also busy Saturday gearing up for next week’s festivities. Casey Baesler said Super Bowl parties bring in some of the biggest shopping orders of the year. “It will be one of our biggest weeks,” he said, adding the store is preparing a variety of fruit and meat trays, along with dips and other platters. “All week they’ll be preparing for it.”
Balloons and other party favors will also be available for both teams, and Baesler joked they too will serve Patriots fans, even though most of the store will be cheering for New York.
“Of course we’re rooting for Eli (Manning) and Steve (Weatherford),” he said.
• As the Super City Committee continues its Touchdown in Terre Haute campaign, designed to promote the use of Terre Haute International Airport for overflow aircraft during Super Bowl XLVI, it’s also getting ready to showcase the community to visitors from Boston, New York and other cities associated with the Super Bowl.
The committee expects an economic boost for the community from the Super Bowl, but the real impact will depend on the impression visitors carry home with them when the event is over. That’s why it’s preparing to provide guests with impeccable service. Dave Patterson, executive director of the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Terre Haute’s hotels, restaurants and retailers will be putting out the welcome mat for Super Bowl visitors, and volunteers will be on hand to greet fans and pilots with hospitality gifts and ready transportation.
