Airport officials working for development

TERRE HAUTE — Airport officials continue their efforts aimed at landing more development at the local facility.

Bill McKown, executive director of the Terre Haute International Airport, told board members Wednesday that plans are in the works to bring a new Indiana Army National Guard operation here with construction possible as early as next spring.

Darrel Zeck, director of operations and development, said officials are working on the proposals involving the National Guard’s FMS 8 division.

“They’re talking about 50 to 60 full-time personnel,” he said, adding that number would increase exponentially during drill weekends and other periods of activity.

Construction costs for the project are expected to exceed $10 million, he said.

McKown told board members his administration is also making progress in assembling a new strategic plan, with an expressed goal of hosting stakeholder meetings by August. That strategic plan is hoped to lead into discussions about more involved planning at all levels.

“This type of planning is essential to this facility,” he said, explaining a number of government grant programs are available, but having planning documents prepared for presentation is essential to securing them.
