TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute native Steve Weatherford will get the chance to defend a Super Bowl title with his New York Giants teammates.
The former Terre Haute North Vigo High School and University of Illinois standout punter and the NFL club agreed to the terms of a five-year, $12.75-million contract today, according to league sources cited in the New York Daily News. The deal, the newspaper reported, included a $3.25-million signing bonus. That bonus exceeds the $2.6 million Weatherford would have made if he had signed under the league’s “franchise tag” structure. The longer-term deal Weatherford signed came instead of that franchise deal.
In a Tweat, Weatherford wrote: “I’m looking forward to representing the NEW YORK GIANTS for the next 5 years. Thank you to our fans for making it an easy decision!”
