Library to extend Internet service

Seelyville residents will get access under new plan

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Public Library will provide Internet access for residents of Seelyville on a trial basis beginning in February.

The plan, put forward by Rick Long, Lost Creek township trustee, calls for laptop computers to be made available for Seelyville residents at the trustee’s office for four hours a week for a six-to-eight-week trial period, said Nancy Dowell, library director.

Providing the computers will help the library assess the need of residents living outside of Terre Haute for Internet services. Use of the Internet at the trustee’s office will be limited to e-government resources, job searching and resumé creation, Dowell said, speaking to the VCPL board of trustees Monday night.

The idea originated when Long approached the library about providing Internet access to low-income Seelyville residents, Dowell said.

Meanwhile, the library board continued discussion Monday night about the future of the West Terre Haute library branch. The board looked at real estate listings of five properties for sale in West Terre Haute. It also discussed the possibility of closing the branch out of financial considerations. No decision was made and the board expects to revisit the topic next month.

The board’s next meeting is set for Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the main branch downtown.
