Police say motorist disregards stopped bus, injuring Clay County student

CARBON — A rural Brazil teenager was injured early Tuesday when he was hit by a truck while attempting to board a school bus in northern Clay County.

The student, 15-year-old Logan Parr, was transported to St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil for treatment of a possible broken leg and numerous cuts and bruises. He was later transferred to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for additional treatment. He was reported in good condition at midday Tuesday.

None of the students aboard the bus nor the bus driver, 74-year-old Jack Glancy, of Carbon, was injured in the incident, according to the Indiana State Police.

The motorist, Mark W. Merrill, 22, of Terre Haute, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal recklessness with a vehicle and reckless driving, for allegedly passing a school bus stop arm and causing bodily injury. He was booked into the Clay County jail with bail set at $5,000 with 10 percent acceptable.

Police said the bus was southbound on Indiana 59 near Carbon at about 7:22 a.m. when it stopped in front of a house to pick up a student. The red lights on the bus were activated and the stop arm was deployed. When Parr started to walk west across the highway to the bus, the police report stated, he was struck by a northbound 2004 Ford F150 pickup truck driven by Merrill.

The school bus was inspected at the scene by Master Trooper Matt Ames, who reported that the bus was found to be in full compliance with the law. Clay Community School Corp. personnel also went to the scene.
