Permanent memorial for fallen police officer planned

TERRE HAUTE — Less than a week after his tragic death, plans are in place to permanently honor the memory of a fallen Terre Haute police officer.

During its regular meeting Thursday night, the Terre Haute City Council voted unanimously for a resolution to designate an approximately 1 1/2-mile stretch of North Brown Avenue in honor of Officer Brent Long. Long was fatally shot Monday while serving a felony warrant at a home on the city’s near-north side.

Thanks to the Council’s action, which was introduced by Councilman Norm Loudermilk, D-3rd, North Brown Avenue from Wabash Avenue to the Terre Haute Emergency Responder Training Academy will be designated “Officer Brent D. Long Memorial Way.”

For postal service and address purposes, the street will still be officially known as North Brown Avenue. The Council’s action only creates an honorary designation of the roadway such as has been done in the past for former Mayor Pete Chalos and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

The roadway will be designated “Officer Brent D. Long Memorial Way” with brown street signs.

The nearly 90 people – including many law enforcement officers – crowded into the City Courtroom for the Council meeting gave an enthusiastic and long standing ovation after the unanimous vote.

Prior to the vote, at the request of Councilman Rich Dunkin, D-1st, Michelle Edwards, deputy city clerk, read the resolution aloud. The one-and-a-half page document noted highlights in Long’s 16-year career as a public safety professional. It also noted his several commendations, including two Grand Cordon Medals, an Honorable Service Medal, a Unit Citation Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and the Medal of Honor.

An official dedication ceremony designating the roadway in honor of Long will take place at a later date, Loudermilk said.

n Also Thursday, the Council voted to postpone a vote on an ordinance that would have blocked plans by WTHI-TV Channel 10 to build a 199-foot relay tower downtown. The vote to table the ordinance, which had been introduced by Councilman Todd Nation, D-4th, effectively allows the long-time television operation to move forward with plans to relocate to the 800 block of Ohio Street.

Following the vote, Todd Weber, vice president and general manager of WTHI-TV, said the station hopes to break ground within 45 days on a new, two-story, 21,000-square-foot television station at Eighth and Ohio streets. WTHI-TV has been at 918 Ohio Street since the early 1950s.

The basic shell of the television station is expected to be constructed by the end of January to be followed by the installation of new equipment, Weber said. Operations could begin at the new facility by May or June, he said.

“Downtown is where we wanted to be the entire time,” Weber said. “This has been a long process…We’re just really excited to stay in downtown Terre Haute.”

The Council also voted to confirm a 10-year personal property tax abatement for LIN Television, which owns WTHI-TV. It also voted to confirm a 10-year real property tax abatement for LIN Television and Garmong Development for the WTHI-TV project.
