ISU police investigating alleged sexual assault, theft

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State University police are investigating an alleged sexual assault and theft that occurred in Lincoln Quad residence hall early Sunday.

Police continue to look for the suspects, believed to be in their late teens and early 20s and from Indianapolis.

A female upperclassman initially contacted ISU police at 3:30 a.m. and reported that she had been the victim of a theft in her room at Lincoln Quad.

“Our officers assisted her in looking for the suspects and we competed that call,” said Joe Newport, ISU assistant police chief.

At 4:42 a.m., the victim again called ISU police to report she was sexually assaulted prior to the theft.

She was transported to Union Hospital for treatment and released.

The 22-year-old victim reported that she had met one of the suspects at The Event Center on East Wabash Avenue. The male and two of his friends gave her a ride back to campus and accompanied her to her room.

Three other friends of the male she had met also came to her room, the victim said. She allowed the six males into her room, Newport said.

The victim told ISU police she hadn’t known any of the suspects prior to meeting them at the Event Center this past weekend. She only knows one or two of them by nicknames.

At some point, the suspects took personal electronic items from her room.

Whether she was sexually assaulted by more than one suspect remains under investigation, Newport said.

The victim admitted to having drinks with at least one of the suspects.

The six suspects are described as African-American, two of them with light complexions and four with dark complexions. None were ISU students. Three of the suspects were in a blue or black mid-to-large size car.

In a separate matter, city police are investigating a report of shots fired near The Event Center just before 2 a.m. Sunday.

A man who had been leaving The Event Center parking lot said he saw another man firing rounds from a gun as he ran through some yards on the north side of Wabash Avenue.

In a separate report, a woman who lives in the 3700 block of Wabash Avenue reported that she found three bullet holes in her car, two in the door and one in the bumper. Police collected one of the bullets from the vehicle.
