No injuries when loaded Vigo bus hit from behind

TERRE HAUTE — No one was hurt Friday afternoon when a passenger car struck a school bus on U.S. 150 near St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in western Vigo County.

The Indiana State Police reported that there were 31 students on the Vigo County School Corp. bus when it stopped about 3:49 p.m. to drop off a student in 4000 block of North U.S. 150. At that point, the bus was stuck in the rear by a 1998 Honda Civic driven by Derek A. Braun, 17, of West Terre Haute.

Braun was cited by police for driving too fast to avoid a collision. The bus was driven by Michael H. Jones, 59, of Clinton. He was not cited by police.

Some students on the bus were released to parents at the scene with remaining students transferred to another bus and taken home, the ISP reported.

A light rain had just fallen in the area and the roadway was slick, police said,

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Ted Robertson. Assisting were ISP Sgt. Joe Watts and Vigo County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Anderson. Officials from the Vigo County School Corp. and West Vigo High School were also on the scene.

As required by Indiana law, the school bus driver will undergo routine toxicology testing and the bus will be inspected by the Indiana State Police before being placed back in service.
