Sullivan partners with Rose-Hulman to develop park

SULLIVAN — The City of Sullivan has announced plans to partner with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to design plans for Sullivan’s Central Park. Sullivan was selected as one of several projects through a program offered by the school as a civil engineering project for the current academic nine week quarter which began March 4.

The park is being designed on the grounds of what currently is the former Central Elementary School (one block north of the square) which has not been in use in several years and is now an eyesore to the city.

Mayor Clint Lamb says that he and other city officials are excited about the possibilities for Sullivan.

“This is not going to be your standard city park. The theme for this historic initiative is ‘It All Starts Here’ because this will be the center piece for rebuilding a city that has been decaying for far too long,” Lamb said. “A movement for rebuilding Sullivan and it is all going to start here.”

The Sullivan Board of Public Works selected a contractor at Tuesday night’s special session to move the project forward. Dore and Associates Inc. now has 20 days to start demolition of the blighted building and will then have 60 days to complete the removal of the structure. The demolition of the property has been funded with a $441,000 OCRA grant that was awarded to the city in October.

“The Central School for many of us is the place we started our education. It was where our values and personal character were molded and our relationships with one another began,” Lamb said. “Our administration is focused on using this location as a spring board to start a movement of cleaning up our city and a place where our community can come together and rekindle that sense of community pride. I encourage all civic organizations and church congregations to take a lead roll in this effort.”

City officials have invited citizens to attend a Sullivan Comprehensive Master Plan session at 6 p.m. April 2 at Sullivan City Hall. The Central property as well as many other plans for Sullivan’s future will be discussed.
