Farrington Grove children receive chickenpox vaccinations

TERRE HAUTE — As of 11 a.m. today, 33 Farrington Grove Elementary schoolchildren and six staff had received chickenpox vaccinations at the school in an effort to curtail a chickenpox outbreak there.

Other families were making arrangements with private physicians, said Carol Lucas, Vigo County School Corp. chairwoman of health and nursing services.

The Vigo County Health Department conducted the clinic at the school from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Vigo County school nursing staff and other volunteers also were present.

Earlier this week, the school had been classified as having an outbreak because it had five or more cases of confirmed chickenpox involving children under the age of 13.

Initially, officials said that 54 children needed to be immunized with an original or second dose. By early this morning, that number had dropped to 42 because parents/guardians turned in records showing their children had received the necessary vaccinations or their children previously had chickenpox, Lucas said.

“It’s really going well,” she said during the clinic. “We are very optimistic. We want to work with parents and we’ve been working well with the Vigo County Health Department.”

If, for whatever reason, students are unable to get immunized today, those Farrington Grove families will be able to contact the Vigo County Health Department on Monday so the children receive the required chickenpox vaccination.

Children who don’t have the required vaccination “will not be allowed to enter school Monday,” Lucas said.

Those who are going to private physicians for vaccinations must turn in those records Monday morning to be able to attend school, she said.

She was not aware of any families refusing to allow their children to be vaccinated.

The school district is trying to work with parents, she said. “Our goal is to get them [children] immunized and get the school in compliance with the state … but avoid any loss of academic time,” Lucas said.

VCSC home visitors were at the school, and some home visits were made to assist families and ensure children were immunized, she said.

Lucas is urging parents and guardians to make sure their children’s vaccinations are up-to-date. “I think this is a wakeup for all parents,” she said.
