United Way sets 2009 goal at $1.8 million

CLINTON — A $1.8 million goal has been announced by the United Way of the Wabash Valley for its 2009 campaign, and the organization has already kicked off an early start aimed at raising 40 percent of that amount.

On Wednesday, 26 Pilot Campaign Companies were given their charge at a press conference hosted by Eli Lilly and Co. north of Clinton.

“We are very grateful for the support of our 26 pilot companies,” said United Way Executive Director Troy Fears. “Their partnership demonstrates how they are truly invested in our community and the United Way of the Wabash Valley.”

The organization plans to raise the $1.8 million this year to provide funding for the programs of its partner agencies.

“It’s a goal we feel is attainable,” Fears said. “We feel the employees in the Wabash Valley will help us reach that goal this year.”

Last year, the campaign raised $1.9 million, but fell short of its goal of $2 million. The economic downturn and the loss of some area businesses contributed to that shortfall, said Gary Morris, who co-chairs the campaign along with Marla DeHart-Flowers.

“But we expect to gradually build it back up,” Morris said of contributions.

In encouraging the pilot companies in their fundraising efforts, Fears noted that the United Way has “changed the way we do business.”

A new strategic plan focuses on improving lives through education, income and health. It is the goal of United Way to help children and youth achieve their potential through education, to help families and individuals emerge from crisis and achieve financial stability, and to improve people’s health.

The United Way Pilot Campaign will continue until Sept. 4. On that date, the results of the Pilot Campaign will be announced and the fall campaign will kick off in an event from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Clabber Girl Marketplace.

The 26 United Way Pilot Campaign Companies are AP&S; Clinic, Forrest Sherer Insurance, Aisin Brake & Chassis, Hamilton Center, Ampacet, Bemis Co., Macy’s, Morris Plan, City of Terre Haute, Novelis Corp., Clabber Girl, Old National Bank, Columbian Home Products, PolyOne, Danisco USA, Duke Energy, Regions Bank, Riddell National Bank, Eli Lilly and Co., Sony DADC, Fifth Third Bank, Terre Haute Savings Bank, First Financial Bank, Union Hospital, the firm of Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos and Newlin, and the United Way of the Wabash Valley.
