A new tobacco policy will make the Indiana State University campus essentially smoke-free, effective today.
The policy prohibits the sale of tobacco products on property owned, operated or leased by the university and bars the use of smoking tobacco except in private vehicles and a limited number of designated smoking areas. The university’s board of trustees adopted the policy in June 2008.
As of July 1, smoking is permitted in only seven designated areas mostly around the perimeter of the campus. Previous policy already prohibited smoking in most campus buildings and within 15 feet of building entrances.
In preparation for the new policy, the university’s Human Resources Office and Office of Student Health Promotions have teamed up to educate the campus about the new restrictions and the availability of smoking cessation resources for students, faculty and staff.
