NEW: Storm leaves 3,800 without power

TERRE HAUTE — Lightning and heavy rains about 8:30 a.m. today left 3,800 Duke Energy customers without electricity, said Angeline Protogere, company spokeswoman.

The storm moved quickly through Terre Haute, the worse lasting about 30 minutes, producing strong winds.

Power outages were widespread, from Allendale subdivision to Margaret Avenue, also 25th to 29th streets in Terre Haute, as well as areas such as Toad Hop, Sandcut and North Terre Haute, Protogere said.

Power was also out near Walmart along U.S. 41, south of Terre Haute.

Police scanner reports indicated several power lines down, as well as one transformer on fire near South Trueblood Place. Also, a lightning strike was reported to a business on North Bobwhite Street.
