TERRE HAUTE — Outdated computers and plain old electronic junk will line an Indiana State University parking lot Saturday, as TREES Inc. hosts its eScrap Super Saturday program.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ISU lot bordered by Ninth and Chestnut streets across from the Ballyhoo Tavern.
Event organizers ask the public to remember that the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be hosted at ISU Friday through Sunday. Heavy traffic is expected on the west side of the campus and eScrap participants are encouraged to take Poplar Street to Ninth Street, instead of using Wabash Avenue or Ohio Street.
Materials ranging from word processors and fans to radio equipment, surge protectors, keyboards, amplifiers, printers and copy machines will be accepted. Organizers ask that products be left intact, without cords cut or screens removed.
No hazardous or chemical waste, including home smoke detectors, will be accepted.
Appliances with freon also are prohibited as are large appliances such as washers and dryers.
There is no drop-off fee, but a $5 donation for a car “trunk load” is suggested, and there is a charge for television sets. TVs that are 27 inches and smaller will cost $5 for disposal; larger sets will cost $10.
The eScrap Super Saturday is sponsored by TREES Inc., the ISU Recycle Center, Indianapolis Recycle Force and Duke Energy.
The organizations’ goal in recycling electronic pieces is to reduce the amount of toxic materials entering landfills while reclaiming valuable resources such as gold, silver and platinum, which are found in trace amounts inside these products.
Businesses and non-profits with large quantities of material should contact the ISU Recycling Center at (812) 237-8150 for information and to make an appointment for drop-offs.
