Clay City — A Terre Haute man died Monday evening when the tractor he was riding flipped into a small lake.

John S. Wynn, 20, was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil following the 6:26 p.m. incident near Clay City.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the incident, which occurred on Clay County Road 200 East near CR 550 South.

Chief Deputy Ron Gambill reported that Wynn was being towed backward on a small John Deere tractor when the blade on the back of the tractor got caught on a tree stump. The tractor flipped into the pond, and Wynn was trapped under it for about three minutes before his father pulled him to shore.

CPR was started at the scene, and continued by emergency responders, but they were unable to revive Wynn.

Responding to the scene were members of the Center Point Police Department, Bowling Green, Clay City and Center Point fire departments, Clay County Search and Rescue, TransCare Ambulance and Air Evac.
