TERRE HAUTE — A northern Indiana woman was seriously injured in a one-car accident Friday on Interstate 70 about three miles east of Indiana 46.
Alicia B. Hicks, 18, of South Whitley, was driving east on I-70 when her car veered off the north side of the roadway and rolled over multiple times, coming to rest on the driver’s side, according to an accident report issued by the Indiana State Police.
Hicks was treated at the scene for possible multiple fractures then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where she was listed in serious condition late Friday afternoon.
The accident happened about 10:55 a.m. Indiana State Police troopers arrived within minutes and reportedly found Hicks ejected from the vehicle and lying on the ground.
According to the report, she had not been wearing a seatbelt.
Two off-duty emergency medical technicians were passing by and stopped to assist the troopers until paramedics arrived.
Witnesses reported the driver had veered into the driving lane and back into the passing lane just prior to the crash.
The eastbound lanes of I-70 were stopped for nearly 45 minutes to land the helicopter and clear the wreckage.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. Routine test results are pending.
State Police Trooper Chip McKee investigated the accident. He was assisted by other ISP troopers, Riley Fire/Rescue and Lifeline Air Ambulance Service.
