Guard member killed in Afghanistan lived in Marshall

TERRE HAUTE — An Illinois National Guard soldier killed in Afghanistan on Sunday lived in Marshall, Ill., according to corrected information released by the Department of Military Affairs.

Staff Sgt. Jason Burkholder initially was listed as currently residing in Champaign, Ill., but he moved to Marshall during leave just before deployment overseas.

During that leave he also married Amanda Burkholder of Marshall.

Sgt. Burkholder, 27, and 1st Lt. Jared Southworth, 26, of Oakland, Ill., were killed while trying to help defuse a roadside bomb, military officials said. Southworth’s father-in-law, Carl Royer, is facilities manager at Maryland Community Church in Vigo County.
